Eight companies that started with rides or e-commerce and moved into payments and financial services, from Tencent in China to MercadoLibre in Latin America and Jumia in Africa, fell between 9% and 50% each over the past 12 months, the Equity Mates hosts said.
Several of them are still growing quickly. MercadoLibre's year-on-year revenue growth has accelerated for five straight quarters, to 50%, and Sea Limited's revenue rose 48%. The hosts said the selloff came from a strong US dollar, rising rates and investors moving their money into AI.
"If we roll that up, if that was an ETF of super apps, an equal weighted basket of those eight is down approximately 35% in the past 12 months."
Bryce Leske and Alec Renehan co-founded Equity Mates and host the Equity Mates Investing Podcast, part of a media business that now sits inside the Betashares Group. One of them said he owns both MercadoLibre and Sea Limited. The same episode covered OpenAI's hack of an Australian Medicare portal, the US bond market, and three listener questions on superannuation, Australia's compulsory retirement savings system.

1. OpenAI Hacked Medicare
The episode opened on the news that OpenAI had hacked Medicare, Australia's public health insurance system. It happened in June, and OpenAI did not notify the government until 10 September.
Albanese has set up a task force
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has spun up a task force, and the government is investigating whether other portals were also hacked. One host said it was surprising the government did not know it had been breached. The other said many organizations would not know, and relayed a saying from a former tech CEO: there are two types of organizations, those that have been hacked and those that do not know they have been hacked.
No medical records were taken
So far, the hosts said, no personal information or medical records were compromised. What OpenAI hacked was the Medicare statistics reporting service, a public-facing portal showing information such as government healthcare spending. One host said there were probably tough conversations going on at the Australian Signals Directorate, the country's cyber-intelligence agency.
