A 10x jump in video prices met "essentially infinite demand," fal's CTO finds

Google's Veo 2 launched at $5 for a five-second video clip, more than 10 times the price of the video models before it, and fal still could not meet demand. Görkem Yurtseven, co-founder and CTO of fal, and Burkay Gür, its co-founder and CEO, told Molly O'Shea on Sourcery that higher quality pulled AI video into paid advertising, marketing and film work.

"Veo 2 was very surprisingly $5 per 5-second video. So it jumped more than 10X. And we were like, 'Who the heck is gonna pay all this money?' Turns out there is essentially infinite demand." — Görkem Yurtseven

Burkay and Görkem built machine learning infrastructure at Coinbase and Amazon before starting fal in 2021, and coined the term "generative media" for the category they now serve. fal has just raised $1.65 billion across a combined Series E and Series F, led by Sequoia Capital and Bessemer Venture Partners.

Key Takeaways

  • Generative media is one of AI's three product-market fits, alongside search and coding agents

  • Video prices rose more than 10x and demand still outran supply

  • fal ran its first business for a year without making a dollar before switching to image models

  • Coding agents make fal's engineers three to four times faster, Görkem estimates

  • AI has had "zero impact" on Hollywood labor so far, Burkay says

  • Margin sits in the compute path, not the application layer

    • Burkay expects every big AI company to become a compute company

1. Rounds Matter Less Now

fal raised $1.65 billion across a combined Series E and Series F. Sequoia Capital led the E and Bessemer Venture Partners led the F. Sequoia also led fal's $140 million Series D at a $4.5 billion valuation in December 2025, and Bessemer has backed the company since its Series B in February 2025.

Burkay Gür says fal stopped announcing each round because the business matters more

"As you do more rounds, I think it's irrelevant. It's the business that matters more." — Burkay Gür
