With Diogo Almeida, Founder and CEO of TypeSafe AI
TypeSafe AI raised less than $40 million about a year and a half ago and is already profitable, its founder Diogo Almeida said, in a field where other new AI labs raise far more just for computing power.
Most AI labs are racing to write code and solve hard math. Almeida's model, Jev, does neither. It makes fast, structured judgment calls that software can use to automate routine work, and some critics have called it a return to the classifiers of the era before generative AI.
"Is it just a classifier? No. But classifiers are awesome."
Almeida, founder and CEO of TypeSafe AI, on TBPN, worked at OpenAI when he first started thinking about this approach. Demand after Jev's launch went beyond every scenario he had planned for, he said.
The full segment is covered here so you can skip it.
Here are the 5 arguments that matter.
Key Takeaways
Jev's launch beat every scenario he planned for, and developers have called it a ChatGPT for developers
Jev does not generate text or code and does not do mathematical reasoning, by design
A model that is right 95% of the time is useless for automation unless it says which 5% it is unsure about
TypeSafe raised less than $40 million and says it is profitable, with computing needs unlike other new AI labs
A classifier is built to make intelligence useful inside software, which is why he embraces the label
1. A Launch Beyond Plan
John Coogan asked whether the demand was coming from customers or from fundraising. Almeida said he was sleep-deprived and that it was everything.
"Every customer wants it." — Diogo Almeida
As far as he knows, every company he has heard of is using TypeSafe, he said, and its systems are under strain in ways he, a back-end engineer, did not know were possible.
Past the 100th percentile
Jordi Hays asked what he had expected. Almeida said he had planned for many scenarios and the launch was above the top of all of them.
"People are calling it like a ChatGPT for developers." — Diogo Almeida
That should not be possible, he said, because ChatGPT is a consumer product. He has his own theory about why it is happening.
