CoreWeave CEO: GPUs built in 2020 are now contracted out through 2029

CoreWeave has contracted out Nvidia A100 chips, a design from 2020, through 2029, Mike Intrator said. He offered it as the answer to two years of questions about how fast AI chips lose their value.

The common view among skeptics is that a GPU is obsolete soon after it is installed, so the companies that rent them out are depreciating their assets too slowly. Intrator said a chip that can no longer train frontier models still has a long list of paying uses.

"So I love this line of questioning because I've been pilloried over this for two years now."

Mike Intrator, co-founder and chief executive of CoreWeave, on TBPN, spoke from Fully Connected, the AI cloud provider's own conference, where CoreWeave launched a product called Forge.

Key Takeaways

  • CoreWeave's A100 chips, a 2020 design, are contracted out through 2029, which Intrator said closes the depreciation debate

  • 90% of clients use two or more CoreWeave products, so it now sells a cloud rather than GPUs

  • He called the depreciation argument "a self serving conversation" by rivals

  • Consolidation among GPU cloud providers is inevitable, he said, perhaps down to 10 or seven

  • Compute is two markets: capacity sold beyond a data center's two-year build time, and capacity sold inside it

1. 5,000 at Fully Connected

Intrator spoke from Fully Connected, CoreWeave's global conference for clients, developers, companies and enterprise labs.

"It was supposed to be 2,000 people." — Mike Intrator

More than 5,000 came, he said. Putting engineers, product staff and clients in one room gives CoreWeave direct feedback on what it has built.

2. A Cloud, Not GPUs
