First test of beaming power from orbit to Earth is weeks away, says Cowboy Space CEO

Cowboy Space's first satellite reached orbit on a SpaceX rideshare, and Baiju Bhatt said the company is talking to it every day ahead of its first test of sending power from space to Earth in the coming weeks.

Most people know Bhatt as a cofounder of Robinhood, the trading app. He started Cowboy Space about two and a half years ago with a different aim: an energy grid in orbit, with solar-powered data centers to follow.

"And my thesis was that energy would be the next major industry to exist in outer space." — Baiju Bhatt

Baiju Bhatt, founder and CEO of Cowboy Space, on Bloomberg Television, cofounded Robinhood, which he said brought commercial activity and capitalism to the pockets of millions of Americans.

Here are the 4 takeaways that matter.

Key Takeaways

  • Cowboy Space will soon try to send power from orbit to the ground by laser, using its first satellite, which is already in contact

  • The company plans its own rocket that becomes the data center satellite once it reaches orbit

    • The rocket's nose cone would unfold in space and work as a radiator

  • Large metal sheets that glow will shed the heat from power-hungry chips, a method Bhatt called common

  • Near-constant sunlight in low Earth orbit lets the chips run almost without pause

  • Chips will stay in orbit until they wear out, because demand for computing power is so high

1. Power Beamed From Orbit

The host asked where the company's first satellite stands and when it would show proof of concept. Bhatt said the satellite went up on a SpaceX rideshare, the company has made contact with it, and it is preparing to show optical power transmission from space to Earth for the first time.

He said the power travels down by laser

He called the idea a little like a magic trick: electricity is collected in space and then produced on the ground.

"And you use free space optics and lasers to carry the energy from space to Earth." — Baiju Bhatt

2. The Rocket Is the Satellite
