With Dale Pinkert, Trading Coach at TradeGateHub

Gold's next stop is 3,800 and the dollar is near its 103 top, a trading coach finds

Dale Pinkert has said for months that gold would fall to 3,800. With gold making new lows, he said it will break its latest low of 3,942 before he gets cautious.

Many investors see gold's fall and the strains in the bond market as a chance to buy metals as a hedge. Pinkert said he wants to see capitulation first, and that with the dollar near his target of 103 and bond yields showing signs of a top, the turn in several markets is close but not here yet.

"It's not a buy in my books. It's in the at least seventh inning of this advance." — Dale Pinkert

Dale Pinkert, a trading coach at TradeGateHub, on Maggie Lake Talking Markets, where he appears regularly to call levels on currencies, bonds, commodities and stocks from his charts, with questions from viewers in the live chat.

Key Takeaways

  • The dollar's rally is in at least its seventh inning, with his 103 target close

  • Gold should break 3,942 and head toward 3,800, and silver needs a day of capitulation before it bottoms

  • Bond yields are showing a topping pattern, and he expects a relief rally in bond prices

  • Japan's 30-year government bond yield may be the most important chart in the world, and it looks like a false breakout

  • The S&P 500 is likely to pull back toward 7,000 before any run to 8,000

  • He is bearish on copper, and sees its weakness as a possible growth scare

  • When the dollar peaks, he would buy the rest of the world, including grains and the New Zealand dollar

1. The Dollar Near Its Top

The host opened by asking whether bond yields are topping.

The dollar is close to his 103 target

Pinkert said the dollar is getting close to the 103 target he has held all year. It does not have to get there, and he would not be buying it aggressively.

"I think we're getting close to some type of peak in the dollar I've been talking about 103 all year" — Dale Pinkert

The euro has reached his level too

"We got to my levels I talked about in Euro 112 for all year." — Dale Pinkert

The euro was at 117 about a month earlier, he said, so the dollar has made a huge move. He would not be short the euro and is looking for a place to buy it.

This is not the time to buy dollars

"It's not a buy in my books. It's in the at least seventh inning of this advance." — Dale Pinkert

The host noted that he has been on the dollar trade for a while, so a call that it is nearly over matters.

2. Metals Need Capitulation
