"It's not moving the markets": Public.com co-CEO on skipping sports prediction markets

Public.com launched AI agents for prediction markets on the day of the interview. An agent can be told to sell a customer's Treasuries if the market's probability of a rate hike rises above 70%, Leif Abraham said.

Most platforms that have added prediction markets lead with sports. Public left sports and entertainment out entirely and listed only events that can move a portfolio, because its customers are investing their life savings.

"Our take on that is no sports, no entertainment, but essentially events that could impact your portfolio."

Key Takeaways

  • Public's prediction markets list only events that can move a portfolio, such as economic data and company results

  • The probabilities become signals for AI agents, which can sell Treasuries when the odds of a rate hike pass 70%

  • Sports contracts are "entertainment finance", and Public's customers are the top quartile of US households

  • AI agents are Public's main growth driver, led by wealthy clients who used to pay management fees for the same strategies

1. Agents That Act on the Odds

Prediction markets, wired into AI agents

"So today, we've launched AI agents for prediction markets." — Leif Abraham

Public is a multi-asset investment platform, Abraham said, and prediction markets, also called event contracts, are something customers have asked for. The company offers only events that move markets: economic releases, company results and the like.

The probability becomes a trigger

Public already has AI agents built into the platform, and combining them with event contracts lets customers do more than trade the events. His standing example is an instruction to sell Treasuries if the probability of a rate hike goes above 70%. The real-time probability becomes a signal for other actions in the portfolio: trades, alerts or risk management.
