With Tibo Sottiaux, Head of Core Products at OpenAI, who leads Codex
Computer use, where an AI operates a computer the way a person does, has gotten 10 times faster over the past year, Tibo Sottiaux said — and not because OpenAI made the underlying model respond faster.
Sottiaux, who leads Codex and OpenAI's personal-agent work, walked TBPN through what actually changed: a second "Guardian" agent that watches every action for safety, a harness rebuilt around each new model, and a new decisions API making a call roughly every 200 milliseconds.
"Dots are like beyond PhD level."
Tibo Sottiaux, Head of Core Products at OpenAI, who leads Codex, spoke with TBPN's hosts at DevDay about dots, computer-use speed and OpenAI's own internal use of specialist agents.
The full interview is covered here so you can skip it.
Here are the 6 takeaways that matter.
Key Takeaways
Computer use is 10 times faster than a year ago, and Sottiaux said that isn't from making the model sample faster
A second agent called Guardian watches over every action a dot takes and can stop it before it happens
OpenAI's new decisions API can make one decision roughly every 200 milliseconds
Dots have no model picker at all — Sottiaux said the product adjusts its own effort automatically
Specialist dots run at OpenAI on their own Mac minis, provisioned with their own IT identity like an employee
He spends about 20% of his time recruiting, and treats interviews as live simulations of a candidate already on the team
1. The Ecosystem Opens Up
Sottiaux said the strongest reaction he heard from other attendees at DevDay wasn't about a specific model, but about OpenAI opening up its ecosystem.
"The vibes are awesome in person." — Tibo Sottiaux
"Everyone I talked to here seems super excited." — Tibo Sottiaux
"Mostly ecosystem and, you know, us opening up like sign in with ChatGPT." — Tibo Sottiaux
