"We don't do sports": Public's co-CEO on prediction markets that move portfolios

Public now offers prediction markets through a partnership with Kalshi, but only on events that can move an investor's portfolio. There are no sports contracts and no entertainment contracts.

Many brokerages are adding event contracts as a stand-alone product. Leif Abraham said Public's version is meant to feed its AI trading agents, so a change in the odds of one event can trigger a trade in a different asset.

"If the probability of another rate hike goes to 70%, sell my Treasuries, for example — making those connections is what we find super interesting." — Leif Abraham

Leif Abraham, co-founder and co-CEO of Public, on Prediction Market Movers, has run the brokerage since it launched at the end of 2019. He said Public was among the first companies to get access to the first GPT API in 2022, and some customers now run millions of dollars through its agents.

Key Takeaways

  • Public's prediction markets cover only events that can move a portfolio, not sports or entertainment

    • The odds become a signal an agent can use to trade stocks, bonds or options

  • Once an agent is set up, it runs as fixed code, so it cannot deviate from instructions or hallucinate

  • Agents run inside the brokerage account, so a trade set for 3:55 p.m. executes at 3:55 p.m.

  • Backtesting and performance reports are the two most requested features, and neither exists yet

  • Public builds for the top quartile of digital natives, not for a $1,000 account

  • Abraham said AI is the next platform shift in brokerage, after the phone, the browser and mobile

    • He said Robinhood won the shift to mobile

  • Public ships at least one major feature every week, because product speed is what it treats as the leading indicator of growth

1. A Multi-Asset Brokerage

The host introduced Public as an agentic brokerage, one where AI agents carry out trades, that had just started offering prediction markets through Kalshi. He asked what sets it apart.

Public is built for people investing their life savings

"Public is an investing platform, and we're really focused on people who are essentially compounding their wealth in the market — people who basically have their life savings with us." — Leif Abraham

That means it offers many asset types: stocks, ETFs, crypto, options, bonds, Treasuries and now prediction markets. Customers can also use AI agents to automate any action in their portfolio, from moving money to managing risk to running trading strategies.

2. Three Uses for an Agent
